PhD Theses
In July 2024, Klara Bangert successfully defended her PhD thesis titled: Biocatalytic access to novel functional building blocks/materials!
Thanks to academic supervisor Wolfgang Kroutil from the University of Graz and the whole research group for support, input, and the great working atmosphere! And thanks to Stefaan De Wildeman, Tom Gheysens, Jolande Celis, and the whole B4Plastics team!
After three years of work in the Biobased Value Circle Network, Benedetta Isella, who did her PhD as a collaboration between Fibrothelium GmbH and the University of Galway, defended her thesis in September 2024. The thesis entitled “Development, Production, and Prediction of Fibroin-Based Degradable Implants” presenting all the work done on the processing of silk fibroin. For those interested, you can read more about the Thesis of Benedetta Isella (The thesis is currently under embargo to publish the papers contained, but the embargo will be lifted in Autumn 2025.)
At the beginning of December, Diogo Manuel Costa successfully defended his PhD thesis at the University of Cologne, after more than three years of work at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), in Germany, and Keey Aerogel, in France. His thesis, entitled “Biobased Aerogels: Form Lab to Technical Scale” focused on the extraction of cellulose from agriculture biomass waste, its conversion into cellulose aerogels, and their upscaling using various technologies to achieve different shapes (beads, sheets, fibers).
